Leaders in Quality Award

Staff health project recognised by Highly Commended placing in Leaders in Quality Awards. Bidwill Trust Hospital received a highly commended placing in the NZ Private Surgical Hospitals’ Association “Leaders in Quality” awards held in Wellington recently. The biennial awards recognise excellence across 24 member hospitals spread across 35 surgical facilities throughout New Zealand. There were two award categories, clinical and non-clinical.

Manager Val Flynn said “In 2009 Bidwill Hospital won the award, so it was great to see the hospital become a finalist again this year”

“We were one of only two provincial surgical hospitals to get into the finals. That Bidwill can achieve success alongside the larger metropolitan hospitals is an excellent result.”

Bidwill’s entry in the non-clinical category was a 10 week staff wellness programme that was supported by TriEx.

The programme “Spring in 2 it” had a simple formula that focussed on a daily commitment to eating 5 plus fruit and vegetable servings, drinking 2 litres of water and exercising for 30 minutes.

The hospital employs 60 staff and 32 signed up for the programme. Pre testing of bloods, bio-metric health measurements and a fitness test were undertaken before the programme commenced. When tests were repeated at the end we found that there had been a measurable improvement in almost all health indicators.

“At the end of the 10 weeks we had recorded 80,000 minutes of exercise, the equivalent of walking the length of New Zealand more than four times." said Mrs Flynn.
